The Hidden Mathematics of ORBIT

An archival jewellery study shaped by gravity, planetary motion and the curvature of time. Gemstone planets travel along their orbits, gathering into constellations across the hand.

An orbit begins with a fall. Drawn by gravity, a planet is always moving toward another body, while its own momentum carries it onward, turning the fall into an endless curve. Within this balance, distance is never fixed: planets approach, recede and accelerate, each path continually shaped by the presence of another.

An orbit is therefore a record of relation. Every curve carries the influence of another body – its mass, its distance, the duration of its presence. What appears to be a solitary path is continually being written by an invisible field of encounters.

I wonder if what we call feeling is less like attraction and more like a disturbance in time. Gravity, after all, does not simply pull bodies together; it changes the rate at which time passes around them. Perhaps certain presences do the same. An hour contracts, a decade remains unfinished, and the past begins to behave like a nearby planet – invisible, yet massive enough to keep the present moving around it.

A concept enters an object through behaviour. In ORBIT, observations of planetary motion become mechanical principles: central gemstones travel within their settings, responding to the movement of the hand, while stackable rings gather into shifting systems. Each addition redistributes the composition, establishing new distances, alignments and centres of gravity.

Across the scale of a finger, metal defines the orbit and stone becomes the moving body. The immense distances of cosmology are compressed into weight, touch and proximity – a planetary model experienced through the hand.

ORBITA now rests within the archive, while its inquiry remains open. The movement of celestial bodies continues to offer new configurations, perhaps calling these gemstone planets into motion once again.
